Relatedly, I'd also be interested if anyone knows research around the situation where people talk to the family member or support person instead of the person with the disability. i.e., research of how people respond emotionally. Or how common this is in practice. And other such topics.
Thanks,
Julia

Subject: Does anyone know good research/resources on elderspeak and other patronizing communication approaches?

Hi all,
I'm curious if anyone knows the literature well around the topics of elderspeak or patronizing communication towards people with disabilities? Basically I'm looking for anything research-esque that talks about the impact of that, how people feel when someone speaks to them that way, etc. Not quite technology-specific, but I figure this is a group that might have come across this. Elderspeak is basically speaking to an older person like a child - it happens a lot more with people with dementia. This relates to a course about accessibility, not specific to aging, so anything people have about patronization is probably useful.
Thanks,
Julia
