To whom it may concern,
I hope this email finds you well. My name is Rhiannon, I am the Research
Coordinator for the SMART Lab at Toronto Metropolitan University. Our
research lab is currently running a study looking into how Deaf and hearing
individuals perceive rhythms through the sense of touch, which may be of
interest to your community.
The basic idea for the study is that participants will come into the lab,
sit in a special chair and feel musical rhythms through a vibrating
backpack. They will also do a few tasks along with the beat, and will use
EEG to see how their brain responds to the beat as well. We will plan to
have an ASL interpreter during their visit to provide them with
information about their rights as a participant and instructions.
I was wondering if you would be able to help us with advertising
this research to the Deaf community. If this sounds like something you are
interested in, please check out the eligibility criteria below and let me
know! Furthermore, I've also attached a flyer below for your review, in
case you're able to share it with anyone who may be interested.
• You were born deaf or became deaf before the age of 3
• Age range: as long as you are above 18 years old and can give consent for
yourself, you are eligible!
• Hearing aid/cochlear implant experience: unfortunately, our EEG equipment
will cause electrical interference with cochlear implants, so we cannot
accommodate cochlear implant users. However, if you have worn/are wearing
hearing aids, that’s totally fine.
• You have no history of brain trauma (e.g. concussion, seizures, strokes)
or neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis)
Compensation: $20 per hour (prorated). Your visit will last about 2 hours.
Location: 105 Bond Street, Toronto, ON M5B 1Y3
(South Bond Building – Toronto Metropolitan University)
Thank you kindly for your time, and I hope you have a nice day.
