Dear community,
Are you interested in exploring how smart cities and Big Data can be
governed according to democratic principles?
The IDRC and the Platform Cooperativism Consortium (PCC) are holding a
co-design to generate insight into whether and how platform cooperatives
can be used as a governance model for smart city data. This is an
opportunity to contribute to the discussion about the social impact of Big
Data collection and use in our city, and to help envision how we might
govern data for community benefit.
We’re looking for a diverse group of participants with an inclusive lens,
expertise in their chosen field, and basic knowledge of co-ops and/or smart
cities, to join us on November 5 or 9 (date TBD shortly) for a series of
activities to gain insight into some of the risks and benefits of a data
cooperative model in a smart city context, and to envision best practices. If
you'd like to participate, please contact cybele.sack at gmail.com and
ather.shabbar at gmail.com and mdiep at faculty.ocadu.ca by October 30th, and we
will get back to you with details.
We are also interested in referrals to other potential participants, so
please share this message. If you are unable to attend one of these dates,
but are interested in this subject, please send us an email with your
interest, and we can keep you posted as other events or materials are
available.
This co-design will contribute to the development of the Co-designing
Inclusive Cities website <https://cities.inclusivedesign.ca/> and insight
gathered from this event will be included in the preparation of a report
for the Sidewalk Toronto smart city initiative at the Toronto Waterfront,
with partial funding from a small grant provided by Sidewalk Toronto
(Waterfront Toronto in partnership with Sidewalk Labs) and the Toronto
Foundation.
Thank you for your time. We look forward to hearing from you.
