[community] communicating inclusive design en masse

Thanks Ather and all. Audience-focus is very important. For topics like this there is always a temptation to create a manifesto, a statement of internal consensus, rather than an outward-looking message of sweet persuasion aimed at feasible audience action. (For the record, a manifesto is fine if that’s what you’re after.)
I want to return to the previous discussion of connectedness. I do not believe that we are already all connected. We have, almost, the capability of connecting with anyone, but I don’t think human beings would enjoy the sensation of global and undifferentiated connection. Our lives are built on selected connections, some of which cross many dimensions, but most of which are, blessedly, unidimensional. Such as this very dialogue! It might be better if more people participated, but not 7 billion people.
Instead of automatic universal connection, it’s the potential value of dynamic new connections that is so attractive; the fact that exploring new connections keeps getting easier is intoxicating. Only technology is making that connection-exploration easier, so design matters. Anyone excluded by bad design makes everyone else’s exploration harder, and their set of connections smaller.
This is best described as a constantly evolving phenomenon of connection opportunities tried, ignored, built, abandoned, etc.; a statement that we are already all connected is static and de-emphasizes human agency and the design process of unpredictably evolving technologies.

I believe the three principles are the cornerstones of how we define and communicate what we mean by inclusive design. However, I wonder how this communication resonates with different audiences. I think it is important to make sure all audiences receive the message in ways that leads to change in perspective. The principles help us communicate well to those who are already proponents of inclusion. Others, such as business leaders, corporations, public servants, students and educators may need to understand what is in it for them and their organizations. I believe, as we update our communication about the these principles of inclusive design, we also need to keep these other audiences in mind and make sure our communication address all audiences.
I would be delighted to have the opportunity to work with others on this project.

I have been following the discussion on this dimension topic and also
recall the draft document Jutta you put together several years ago. I
agree that we need this articulated in a more simplistic form and agree
that being unique and connected can work together. The piece in my mind
that is missed in the 3 proposed points is the ability to be holistic
through diverse collaboration and connectivity. Addressing those who are at
risk of greater divide, we must takenote of those who do not use media or
communicate through common channels for many reasons. We must step back and
ensure that while taking into consideration those 3 dimensions, we do not
create a bigger divide by not recognizing that while we believe we are all
connected, many don't feel that way. So it's bringing everyone together in
a way that we can form that complete circle. Hope this is helpful.
