[community] EPUB readers and ARIA

Hi David,

We did some testing of EPUB 3.0 accessibility testing a while ago (before the 3.1 spec) and found iBooks, Calibre, and Readium exposes ARIA for screen readers. However, just like web accessibility, we found that each reader platform and screen reader combination to have their quirks in terms of how they interpret and read back information (marked with ARIA or otherwise)

After some testing, we discovered there was no “ideal” configuration and the approach wasn’t to force users into using a particular technology combination, but to have the EPUB document robust enough to accommodate a variety of situations.

We documented our research in the Inclusive EPUB 3 guide<http://handbook.floeproject.org/InclusiveEPUB3.html>. In particular, you may find the section “Testing and Validation<http://handbook.floeproject.org/TestingAndValidation.html>” relevant.

Since our initial research, EPUB 3.1 specification<http://www.idpf.org/epub/31/spec/epub-spec.html> has been published which brings the EPUB closer in line with web standards. Though the spec has changed, the underlying principle still remains - it’s good to have a robust, well-structured, and semantically logical EPUB to start with.

Hope this helps.

- Jon.

Hi. Can anyone recommend an EPUB reader that supports WAI-ARIA?

Regards,

David
